Specs: Windows 10
I am using windows 10 and want to back up to an external hard drive.
1. Can I continue to use my computer while it is backing up?
2. If I leave my computer while backup is in progress my computer switches itself off, what happens to my backup then?

Windows back up takes a snapshot (Shadowcopy) of the drive as it is when you start the back up so it should be fine to use it after the first few minutes. If anything is being accessed at the time it needs access there might be a file skipped on the back up, if you do regular back ups then it is unlikely that you will miss anything on more than one back up. My understanding at least.
Other programs may be different so as mentioned, read the instructions and FAQ's.
If critical, schedule for when you are done using it for the day normally and turn off the monitor (desktop) and let it run.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Best not to use your PC for anything else while it's doing a backup.

It shouldn't turn itself off whilst it is busy doing something, if it does there's something wrong with your PC.

Do not confuse the monitor going into power saving mode with shutting down or sleeping. If it lights back up immediately when touching the mouse or a keyboard key then it was the monitor went into power saving mode only and you can ignore it.

1) Depends on the backup software. Check its documentation for specifics, but generally yes.
2) Depends on the backup software. Check its documentation for specifics, but generally the backup software will keep the computer from going into sleep mode if sleep mode is a concern.
