how to select my printer

January 12, 2020 at 01:33:58
Specs: Windows 10
After I have captured the part of the screen that I want to print , the program won't let me select my printer, but only shows print to PDF, which I don't want. This has only just started doing this. For many years it has sent the print to my regular HP printer. I can't find a way to stop it printing to PDF. Please help

"I can't find a way to stop it printing to PDF"
Reinstall your printer.

If you go to Devices and Printers, select your printer, Manage Printer, Print Preferences you will see the default printing settings. Uncheck the "print to file" or Print to PDF", Apply, OK. and exit all. When you next print, look for the same box to make sure that it is not checked there for that application specifically. Uncheck if needed and print. Once this is done it should stay this way.

If this does not fix it, you may actually need to uninstall the printer (do not remove software if asked) then reinstall the printer through the Add Printer options.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I'm so grateful for this column. I'm also an HP printer user and recently, I face a very identical problem. I tried a few ways to solve it but got baffled. The data shared here by user Fingers really benefited me. Thanks for sharing.

How did you capture the part of the screen?

Which specific program won't let you select your printer?

What exactly prevents you from selecting your printer - do you not see your printer in print wizard? Is it grayed out?

Have you gone into the printer control panel and set your normal printer as default?

Fingers:

re: Uncheck the "print to file"

I thought Print to File created a prn file not a pdf file. That's what my Win 10 system does.

In addition, the OP said "the program won't let me select my printer, but only shows print to PDF".

Even if Print to File was checked, I'd think he'd still be able to see his other printers, not just Print to PDF. I do. Print to File grays out my default printer, but my full list is still visible.

I think we need more details, as I requested in #5. What exactly is he seeing and in what application(s) is the issue occurring?

The OP has not been back since the original post. We have to assume that either he resolved the issue, used a different method of selecting (maybe snipping tool), or no longer cares.

Not sure, as anybody can read any post, even without logging in. He/she may be waiting on a good response.

Or, what also happens, is that the threadstarter realised he has doing very stupid, and the solution is embarrassing.

On topic: either the printer has gone out of the Windows selectable printers, or it has a non-valid status (which makes it non-selectable, even if you'd like to). But in the latter case the OP would have mentioned that, probably. The "application" just runs the Windows API, so it's a Windows problem, more likely.
