This freebie (VLC player) will open about every video file type and is highly recommended on these boards:

I have just found that although VLC plays m4v files, those downloaded via iTunes Store have special DRM so it cannot play them. For these use the converters suggested at response #1.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Yeah, VLC or CCCP are the preferred methods. They're effectively functionally identical and better than iTunes, so go with with whichever.

Generally speaking, videos purchased from iTunes are not allowed with other Non-Apple software. So, VLC or Realplayer or others are impossible to play the iTunes videos normally. However, you can consider to remove the DRM protection at first before you playing the video. TunesKit DRM Media Converter is strongly recommended choice.

You will have to remove DRM from your iTunes movies before you can play them on other players. Check this post.

At first, you need to check whether the M4V videos are DRM-protected. For the common M4V videos, you can use the free video converter such as Handbrake to convert it to a universal format - MP4. For the DRM-ed M4V videos, you can't finish the conversion with the common audio converter. To do that, you can take a reference a guide on google below:
