Move the volume slider from high to low & back to high.

If that doesn't work, see if you can get some clues from here.

On device manager at first there was no Sound, video and game controllers and I learned to bring it up again by going to Action and Add legacy hardware and then I managed to add the Intel WiDi Audio Device as my audio device. Before all that if I rest the mouse on the speaker icon which had a cross on it it said No audio device installed. Now everywhere I go, it’s showing as if I have audio but only no sound.
Actually, I’m not sure as to what audio driver I had before this problem . I suppose it’s a on board sound device.

It’s at 100%
When I go to update driver it tells me I have the best driver installed. When I uninstall the driver and restart the pc like I have been advised I don’t get the driver back on my device again.

Please post the model & model number of your laptop. Looking at the specs you listed - amd athlon xp 2600+5 - I'm guessing those are not for the laptop because Win10 won't even install on a system with an Athlon XP because it doesn't support PAE/SS02 & NX.

The lack of sound is likely a driver issue. You need to know which sound chip is in the laptop & then download the correct Win10 compatible driver.

I don’t know how those specs you quoted got on there, they are not mine. Mine is Asus, F555LD. When I bought it 2 yrs ago, It had windows 8 and I upgraded to win10. All was good, until Tuesday morning saw the x on the speaker icon. The last thing I did a few days ago was go into sound on control panel and in advance tab, tick the volume enhancement box to increase the volume and it worked fine, but now in that advance tab there ie no box showing that volume enhancement anymore.

That's better, I would leave everything checked, except > Nvidia GeForce & then click update.

Reboot.

Test & if things are still not right, update > Nvidia GeForce

I'll go through these logs.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it onto your Desktop. If your default download location is not your Desktop, drag it out of it's location onto the Desktop.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
If we have to run Farbar more than once, refer this SS.
http://i.imgur.com/yUxNw0j.gif
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the Desktop.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt) on the Desktop.
The logs are large, upload them using this. No time delays/Captcha-I'm not a Robot/account/registration needed. Give us the links please.

Process of elimination dave, here is the next step. Test when completed.

Copy & Paste the text in Blue below & save it into Notepad on your Desktop & name it fixlist.txt
NOTE: It is important that Notepad is used. The fix will not work if Word or some other program is used.
NOTE: It is important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Then it goes on trying to play some sounds with different drivers but still no sound. Then finally it says “ problem found”. Generic audio driver. Not fixed

In the taskbar search box, type Services and press Enter. Scroll down to Windows Audio. If the service has been stopped for any reason, your system audio will not function correctly. Restart it by double-clicking and selecting Start. While you are here, double-check the service start-up type. Audio services should be set to Automatic by default. If it is anything different – Automatic (delayed start), Manual or Disabled – change it back.

Since changing devices on the update driver on the device manager there is nothing showing up on the sound page,” no audio devices are installed “ is what I get.

"Could the sound chip on the motherboard stopped working"
We have just about exhausted all avenues, so maybe the fall has damaged something.

"I have a feeling if I can get this hardware to instal all would be fine"
Exactly.
That is why I asked you to confirm it was in the Sound page & Device manager, because in previous SS they were not.

"but dont know what is this "error' that is happening"
Which is what we have been trying to do all along.

"so i downloaded the update driver"
What version?

✔ Best Answer
Move the volume slider from high to low & back to high.

If that doesn't work, see if you can get some clues from here.

they are not helping, just recovered from a crash and 2 houts later it repaired itself. Right now while trying to get the sound again this is what its showing. Is it saying to physyically reconnect the device inside the computer( maybe after the tumble it has come loose)
