Specs: Windows 10 64 bit, Athlon X2 5200+/8 GB DDR2
I want to enable option that my windows "don't download and install automatically windows updates".
I found this trick
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you’d like to do this yourself, the exact setting you’ll need to change is under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU — you’ll need to create the last few keys there. Create a DWORD value named “AUOptions” under the AU key and give it one of the following values:
00000002 (Notify for download and notify for install)
00000003 (Auto download and notify for install)
00000004 (Auto download and schedule the install)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But after fresh install of windows 10, I did not find "Windows Update" in registry "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows", I have checked on two different PCs with fresh installation. see https://ibb.co/gcjtfH
And during this time, windows starts downloading windows updates.
After some time or a few days may be, I saw the folder, I tried the above procedure, and it worked.

Kindly tell me with out any delay, how can I enable this option "don't download and install automatically windows updates"? OR
tell me some other easy procedure that works. Thanks.

✔ Best Answer
If the problem is that the key ...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

... does not exist in your registry, then the fix is easy.

Select or go into the key ...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\

... and create a new key named "WindowsUpdate". Then select or go
into the new key and create a second new key named "AU". That is
what is meant in the text you quoted where it says "you’ll need to
create the last few keys there."

Now go into the "AU" key, create the DWORD named “AUOptions”,
and set its value.

Let us know whether that was the problem, whether you are able to
change the registry, and whether the change has the desired effect.

Just a couple of points. You mentioned the key Windows Update. You have to be "exact" when working in the registry. I assume it is given as WindowsUpdate (no space) - If so make sure you present it that way.

When you have finished, if you left click the key AU you can check whether you got the path right by looking for it at the top of the screen (at the bottom in earlier Windows versions). It should be as per your original post if that was correct.

EDIT:
Could you let me know if this trick works on Win 10 Home, also whether it still allows Windows Defender to update its data base. Thxs.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Derek, this is the guy who is using a hacked torrent of Windows 10 with an illegal key. He posted of other posts with all sort of problems due to this not being a legitimate copy.

I would take the results he posts to you with a grain of salt, no telling how his setup will act.

It happens that I just re-installed Windows 10 Home six days ago,
and it has not been allowed to call home to MS to do any updating.
I could see what the guy's problem was right away because those
last two keys do not exist in my registry either. I've prevented
updates by other means.
