Hi there,
Every time I try and make a backup to my external Hard disk drive. My Laptop shuts down. How do I stop this from recurring? I have tried just about everything that I can think of. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Could be power-saving settings
Does it shutdown all the way or does it go into sleep/hibernate mode?you may want to change your energy mode to high performance & set time-till-sleep to never instead of the 10-60 which is set by default on most laptops

Hi,
Thanks for the reply and help...It shuts down completely.
That was my only bet, let's for someone else to reply. In the mean time could you check in event-viewer for hardware (critical-)errors around the time you had one of these shutdown.

Install a monitoring program HWMonitor or similar and monitor the temperatures while the process is working. If the temps continue to rise then it is a thermal shut down to protect it from being damaged. If this is the case and the machine is not very new then it probably is time to get a can of compressed air and blow out all of the vents. Report the temperatures and the results of the cleaning for additional advice. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
