Solved How do I simply copy C drive files to an external drive?

March 6, 2017 at 11:03:39
Specs: Windows 10
I currently have an HDD which I intend to use as a slave drive, replacing it with an SSD that will be booted with a Windows 10 ISO disk.
I am planning on copying the C drive to an external drive, and once the SSD is up and running, copying only the files I want from the external.
The HDD will be formatted.
How do I simply make a copy of the files on the HHD to the external drive?

Why not just copy what you need rather than the entire C-drive?

✔ Best Answer
You can Copy Paste your entire Documents, Pictures, Videos, etc. Folders to the external drive. You cannot copy programs but you can copy any installers that may have been saved manually or in your Downloads Folder.
There is no reason to copy the entire C drive unless you plan on making a Clone of the C drive directly on the SSD drive before swapping it in. Note that a clean fresh install of Windows on the SSD drive is a better overall option. Note that if you opted for the Clone method then you are going to have to change a few things to optimize your installation for the SSD drive (Turn off Defrag, Turn off Indexing, activate TRIM, to name a few).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Thanks for the feedback.
I'll do as suggested and copy relevant files and folders over then.
It's my sons pc so I'm going to have to talk to him about his games and installers.
