The usual way is "Tools > Internet Options > Delete button" but where exactly are you seeing the empty folders and the 25+ items?

You can also right click your system drive and run Disk Clean-up.

I assume this is not a search engine history on your home page.

Install CCleaner-Slim & use it regularly.

I was able to get the history folder cleaned up. Now, though, there is nothing being saved. No history is showing at all when I click on the star to view it.

I shut the computer down for the night. I've been to quite a few places and nothing is being saved.

Please explain more clearly what you're doing & why. 1st you wanted to delete history, now you're complaining that the history isn't being retained. If you're concerned that "someone" might be able to know what you've been doing online, there's also cookies, temp internet files, index.dat files, etc that can be used to track you.

I rarely use Internet Explorer but I have the "Days to keep pages in history" set to zero. I also have the box checked to "Delete browsing history on exit" & the Temp Internet File disk space set to 250MB. Regardless, I run CCleaner after EVERY browsing session, regardless of which browser I use & even if that means running it 10 times a day. That means I have to re-login to Computing.net (or any other sites that require a name/password) each time I visit, but it's a small price to pay.

EDIT: I just realized we're in the Windows 10 forum. You're being tracked no matter what you do, lol. And if you have a microphone connected, Cortana is listening to absolutely everything!

Check the settings mentioned in riider's post, namely "Days to keep pages in history" and "Delete browsing history on exit".

By the way, Windows 10 tracking can be reduced by going to settings, including disabling Cortana.

If #7 doesn't help then Reset IE like this:

Go to IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab > hit the Reset button.

You will lose your add-ons but they will soon come back with usage. Put back any add-ons that you put in yourself (if any). It will probably reset to its default homepage so that will need setting back if you had changed it. This procedure has every likelihood of fixing your problems and it will not mess with your Favorites - they will be safe.

Up until yesterday when I clicked on the history in the tools over weeks of history would be listed. I tried deleting them and they wouldn't delete. I finally was able to delete the history in the C:\Users\....\AppData\Local\Microsoft\History folder. There were over 65 items. NOW nothing is being saved to the history folder. Its empty. I'll get this figured out. Thanks for the help.
