Solved How can I remove a program which can't be uninstalled?

March 1, 2018 at 07:20:35
Specs: Windows 10
I tried to download Canon's driver for my digital camera and encountered issues. I have done this process in the past with my old laptop successfully, but for some reason with my brand new laptop, the end result is "an error has occurred" whereby I do not successfully get the software after running the application. However, Canon shows in my programs (only it is a not really in my system at all). Since the software did not install, I want to remove the program. When I attempt to uninstall this Canon program, windows shows this pop-up: "Universal Uninstaller.exe could not load c\:program files (x86)\Common". The tech removed this Canon program for me once, but with my final attempt of trying to getting the software this morning, once again the Canon appepared in my programs. How can I uninstall this program which is not really in my system and why isn't windows letting me uninstall it?

Clicking the Green button, takes you to the cnet site.
http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Unins...
My safety mechanisms, block downloads from that site. It adds it's own adware.

Try Wise Program Uninstaller

Did you make sure the software/driver is compatible with your version of Windows before attempting the installation? Why do you even need the driver? The camera should be recognized by Windows as soon as you connect it & then you can just retrieve your photos from the DCIM (Digital Camera IMages) folder.

If Revo Uninstaller isn't able to get it, please post your system specs, Windows version (Win10 32 or 64-bit?), model of the camera, & which driver you're attempting to install.

I did confirm with Canon that my camera's software on the Canon site is compatible on Windows 10. I have downloaded it before successfully onto my old laptop which was also running WIndows 10. I used the incorrect terminology in my question, I intended to say "software" and not driver. If I have the software I can press the wireless button on my PowerShot Elph 360 and it prompts a Canon screen to pop up which lets me transfer photos from my camera to the laptop. I like how it works and I would like to be able to continue using my camera/laptop as I have in the past. I have a 64-bit operating system on my new ASUS UX430UA and using WIndows 10. I did have a thought on this matter...There are various versions of Windows 10 and the old one was downloaded when it was first released. My new laptop was downloaded about 4 days ago. Perhaps Canon isn't caught up with the most current Windows version and they need to update their software? Is that a possibility? The link to the software (Digital Camera software 7.1 , File name dcsw-7-1-01-91.zip):

Is it the "FREE" category I should be clicking on? Do you feel that this version may work in the uninstalling of the Canon programs? I really don't want to join or pay for the other 2 categories.

Free version of revo should do it - that's all most folk use.

If you get stuck with the entry in "Control Panel > Programs & Features", CCleaner has a "Delete" option (as well as an Uninstall) if you happen to be using that.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

"How can I uninstall this program which is not really in my system"
1: Type printer into search & click on > Printers & scanners
2: In the left hand column, click on Printers & scanners.
3: If the device appears on the right hand side, left click on it & hit > Delete.

John W: There are 3 "Download Now": each one seems to offer a different function. One of them is Three steps for Widow Drivers, one is for Faster Installs and I'm not sure what the function of the center top download is for. Which one for the Canon program removal?

If the software is old then it might be 32bit, while Windows 7 64bit and before supported most 32bit programs, apparently Windows 10 64bit does not. Your other Windows 10 machine may have been 32bit. If this is the case, it is up to Cannon to create compatible software. They may elect not to if the product is too old but their software for newer cameras may be backward compatible with yours. Ask them, they should know.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I clicked the link you gave in #10

There is a table with ticks and crosses in it.

Below the table "on the left" is some information about Revo Uninstaller.

Below that there is a green button with white writing that says FREE DOWNLOAD
(and beneath it "Version: 2.0.4"). That green button is what I meant.

EDIT:
Alternatively, at the bottom of the column headed "Free" is another FREE DOWNLOAD button, which should do. The main thing is you don't need a "trial" or to pay for it.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

John

Just for my own info, is Wise Program Uninstaller freeware or a trial?

The reason I ask is that their website says "Completely free" in one place and "try before you buy with free trial" elsewhere on the same page.

Thx

I use Softpedia for virtually all my downloads Derek, they save a lot of sifting through dialog.
The link posted goes straight to the Free version.

Advantages of using 3rd party download sites.

1: No need to scroll through the site to find the FREE version, or if available, the English page.

2: Often they are the 1st to have the download, to take the load off the author's site. Most have a link to the author's site.

3: Often you get screenhots & reviews/ratings from users. Also OS: & System requirements are detailed.

https://i.imgur.com/rrxFXbJ.gif

4: You get information about the program Limitations:
Examples
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office...
· License Generation For Other Users is Disabled
· Printing is disabled.
· Documents Modification is disallowed.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD...
· For personal usage CDCheck is FREE
· Unregistered program continues to function after 30 days but a nag screen is displayed at startup.

Limitations: · Watermark

5: Avoid registration/email address, which lots of author sites require.

6: I use Softpedia & FreewareFiles.com, they make you aware what Ad-supported programs the author of the program has included.
http://win.softpedia.com/index.free...
http://www.freewarefiles.com/new_fi...
WARNING: CNET Download.com downloads now come bundled with opt-out crapware and toolbars ( Same applies to Softonic & Brothersoft )

Examples > FormatFactory, Advanced SystemCare FREE & K-Lite Codec Pack Standard
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multim...
Users are advised to pay attention while installing FormatFactory for the following reasons:
Offers to download or install software or components (such as browser toolbars) that the program does not require to fully function
Displays ad banners or other types of advertising material during its runtime
After installation, opens web pages featuring advertising or similar income generating content.

Use Unchecky to help prevent these third party installs. Nothing is perfect, the badies are always ahead of the goodies, so be vigilant.

A reliable application that aims to protect your computer against third-party components, often offered during software installations.

7: Not only can you get the download, but also a lot of extra usefull info.
Example, look at the L/H column of this site.
http://www.shellcity.net/
Another example.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?...

8: If you know the name of the program or what type of program ( a hint will do ) they have search available, sometimes with a choice of language.
Examples > ISO & Portable using the English choice.
http://www.freewarefiles.com/search...
http://www.filehippo.com/search?q=p...

9: The really good sites have already run spyware/adware tests & advise accordingly.
Example
http://www.freewarefiles.com/
http://www.freewarefiles.com/CClean...

10: Some sites have old versions of a program available.
Example > CCleaner ( in the R/H column )
http://www.filehippo.com/
http://www.filehippo.com/download_c...

11: Many sites have continuous updates of freeware.
