I am writing a formula to calculate a handicap for a sport. The result of the calculation cannot be less than zero or greater than 8. my formula to calc the handicap is

(ab-40)*0.8

how do I put in the not less than 0 or greater than 8 rule?

There are two symbols on your keyboard < > which you use as greater than > and less than <

Your going to need both an IF() an AND() function, something like: =IF(AND((ab-40)*0.8>0,(ab-40)*0.8<8),"Pass","Fail")

Although your calculation will have to be modified so Excel will understand it.

(ab-40)*0.8is not a valid Excel calculation. And Excel questions are best asked in the Office Software forum.
