Is there anything on the screen - even briefly?

Was there anything untoward occuring the last time it did boot OK?

Are there any signs of life at all; indicator lights for hard drive etc. flashing (even briefly), and the power indicator?

Presuming it does power up, try pressing F8 immediately after any "splash screen (that's the one that usually advertises the logo etc. for the laptop manufacturer). You may need to press and hold it a few times. If F8 responds you ought to get to a boot menu, and there you select safe-mode.

But first try Derek's trick, which sometimes resolves problems like this. Remove mains adapter and the battery; then press and hold the power on/off button for about 30seconds. Then release and re-insert battery, and connect to mains adapter again. and see if the laptop will boot "normally". If it doesn't try the F8 routine as above (you will have to power down/switch off the laptop and then power up again before trying the F8 routine.

What make and model is your laptop?
