using string.replace with a wild card

Specs: Linux x86_64
I am trying to write a script that will find "#" on a page such as "#pics" and then convert it to a html link and inject it back into the page. For example:

every instance of "#pics" will be replaced with #pics

I am pretty new to Javascript but it seams I want to use string.replace(search_item, replace_item) but I am unsure how exactly I would implement it with the wild card.

Any help would be great.
