For the longest time, I've used CMS systems to do websites(Joomla, wordpress, etc). I'd like to take the plundge into starting from scratch. I'm familer with MySQL, PHP, HTML, and css(By far not an expert) and i've put together some simple login/user pages using some tutorials on the net. Now the biggest thing im worried about is the authentication and passing MySQL querys securly.

I've found at least 4 diffrent tutorials using php login sessions(One dated 2004) and each one seems to do it a little different.

I found one that I like and it uses a few diffrent pages to do the login. for example:
2-login form.php

My Question: is this method pretty secure? If not, could someone point me to some better/updated methods?

Your example doesn't really explain what's happening, and I can't tell you if it's secure or not.

I like to use the Pear::Auth module for handling sessions. It will redirect users if they've timed out & handle session data, etc.
