|Step 1: Buy domain name|
Step 2: Buy web hosting (Some web hosts allow you to buy a domain with them)
Step 3: Connect your web host with your domain name (Done automatically by web host if purchased together. If not done together, both your domain registrar and web host will have specific instructions to guide you)
Your web host will give you account information to access your control panel.
Step 4A: Log into control panel and find File Manager, OR
Step 4B: Log into control panel and find FTP Acccounts area
If followed 4A: Select each individual file and upload a few at a time. You'll need to create each folder because you can't upload a folder. If you have your file structure already made, you may be able to compress it, upload the compressed file, then decompress it within File Manager. That will save time.
If followed 4B: Create a FTP account and strong password. Download/Install a FTP client like FileZilla or FireFTP (a Firefox addon). Enter in credentials and login to your web host with FTP. From there, it's drag-and-drop files/folders from your computer to the web server.
HostGator is a good web host, but I personally use BlueHost. You can buy a domain name with them and it makes the process easier. They have awesome service and support and I recommend everyone buying shared hosting (good for personal sites, small businesses, etc.) buy through BlueHost.
The link I provided is an affiliate link, which I get financially compensated if you follow. I don't recommend Bluehost because they pay me. I recommend BlueHost because I absolutely believe their service is fantastic and I've used them for years. I'm a happy customer and want you to be too.
