Solved Accessing MyBB server locally

July 12, 2014 at 00:34:18
Specs: Windows 8.1 Pro, AMD Bulldozer 6 Core 3.5GHz (Overclocked 4GHz) / 8 GB
This is my problem:
I have a XAMPP server running Apache and MySQL. On top of that, I installed MyBB on Apache, and set it up to use the domain example.com (for security reasons, I won't give out my domain name).

The problem is that, when I access the local static IP of the server (192.168.0.100) the CSS style-sheets don't load. My theory is that it's trying to load the CSS sheets from example.com instead of 192.168.0.100, but since my router doesn't support NAT Loopback it doesn't work. Also, all the links on 192.168.0.100 point to example.com/forums/xyz.php.

I have added and entry for my domain to 192.168.0.100 in the hosts file, but that isn't a permanent fix, as I use my laptop too, and I take that thing everywhere, and don't want to modify the hosts file every time I leave my house.

I hate BSOD's

✔ Best Answer
Create an RR (Resource Record) for your domain in your DNS Server.
Also create a PTR (Pointer Record) for reverse name resolution.

Configure your laptop to use your local DNS server.

As long, as your laptop is in your local net, your local DNS server is responsible to resolve the domain name to it's local ip address.

When outside your local network, public DNS servers are responsible to resolve the domain name to it's public ip address.
