what port is telnet running on

Specs: Windows XP
We manipulate the telnet port. When a specfic user logs on, need to know that the proper telnet port is turned on in the AIX environment.

Telnet (telnetd) runs on port 23 (destination port) but make sure you know the difference between a destination port & a source port. Source ports are random ports above 1023. It has nothing to do with the user.

Many people use SSH instead of telnet (port 22). It's more secure.

It must be the source port that we manipulate to 8716 or 6178. I just need to know when the user is logging in that the port is set to 6178 to permit the login.

Thanks for your reply.

The user doesn't login to the port. The user starts a process. If you want to know when the process is started or if you want to limit a process, that's something else.

If a user is going to telnet to some server, is there a problem with that? If someone is going to telnet to your AIX server, they have to have an account & their source port doesn't matter.

Explain your ultimate goal.
