search to directory

Specs: Windows Vista
I have a directory /logfiles, and there is lot of big log_files. What is the faster way to make search to that directory. awk, perl or grep (or other). Plase, give me example for this. Let say, we must find all files and lines of the files, where is string "thanks".

cd /logfiles ; grep thanks * # is very slowly

You're right about it being slow.

I tried grep -r thanks (actually, I used a different word)

Then I went to a command prompt in XP & ran

grep -e thanks *.*

The output appeared in a split second.

Then I ran grep -e thanks *.* in FreeBSD & the output appeared just as fast as it did in Windows.
