I want to test my backup tape

Specs: Sun OS 5.6
I want to test my backup tape by doing a restore to a "test" directory, then do a binary compare on existing tapes (that have not since updated). Yes, I AM paranoid, but experience does that to you.

You can test by recording a directory and restoring on another disk, then compare the files with a program that calculates a hash or check sum of the file. Since most tapes probably don't save a file image it is impossible to compare a tape with the restored file on the disk. Some of the tape backup software calculated and stored the checksum as it did the backup in order to have a check when it is restored. MD5 checksums are frequently used with internet files for download. The checksums are provided so you can check if the file transfer was correct.
