Hello I am a member on another forum. Someone on the forum posted as a guest and they posted personal info on me. They posted my address name and phone number. I have not EVER gave anyone any info like that. So my question is how can they get that? I am taking this serious. Can they track me down by my IP address?

It is possible to track through ones IP address but it would take a little doing. Not just any joe blow could do it. More than likely I would suspect that it is someone that you personaly (physicaly) know. I would ask the site for action and demand the post be removed. I have had a few people tell me there are programs on the internet that can track your home address using you IP but I have tried most of them and they all point about 30 miles from home. It isn't that hard to get the persons IP but then normally you would have to go through their ISP to get much further and short of a court order it is illegal for them to give out that information.

OK this forum is hosted on a server in his home. He or one of his admins made the post using my name. It had to be one of the admins because they posted under my name. Then when I asked for it to be removed they asked why I posted it. But now it is removed. But anyway I do not know any of them personally. The address they posted was not my mailing address. I have 2 addresses 1 is a 911 address and the other is a mailing address. The phone number that was posted was my parents but we share the same mailing address. So the info was not 100% but close enough to be concerned.

I never put up my personal information on sites like these. Fortunately joining this particular site doesn't include any requests for private information but if it had they would have received something like this:

First Name: Curt
Last Name: Noneyabiz
Address: 123 Spagetti St
City: Nowhere
Province/State:(any one not the one I live in)
Postal Code: (enter any fake thing you want)
Phone Number: (make something up)

For email address I would use a valid hotmail account. I use the same one for signing up for anything on the internet so it can be spammed and not my real "home" email address as per my ISP.

Since most sites of any kind only ever contact you, or verify you, through email, that's the only piece of information that needs to be correct.

Since most forums like this do not need my real address and info (ie: they won't be sending me anything) I refuse to give it. The ONLY time I use my real information is when I'm ordering something online and then it has to be a 'secure' session (ie: https) and I won't get spammed out of the deal. I only do online business with well known, reputable companies that don't give out, or sell, my information to other companies.

Take a tip from me, NEVER give out your personal info unless absolutely necessary.

And yet, you post in here that someone on another forum is posting personal information about you on that forum.

If you didn't put the personal info into that site when you signed up then it follows logically that whomever posted the aforementioned personal information must know you.

They do not know me. They are from New Jersey and I am from Georgia. I do not know anyone from New Jersey. These people at this forum are bad news. I now stay away from it. The forum is hosted on a private server in someone's house. And they are also hosting some illegal downloads. But I stay away now. I could report them for the downloads but not sure if it would do any good. But as for the info on me. I am not sure how they got it. They could be also hacking someway to get it. Maybe they somehow hacked there way in my ISP and got the info I am not sure. Now if anyone is wondering how I got involved with them. I was in a yahoo chat and got invited to the forum.

"They do not know me. They are from New Jersey and I am from Georgia."

With the above nugget of information. I'm guessing you are from Rockledge. In a matter of seconds, literally -- thanks to you & Switchboard -- the average person with rudimentary internet skills could have guessed the same. I could probably call you if I wanted to or send a postcard to say hi ;-)

The point I & others are making is: people can find you, if you make it easy for them to.

Chris, here are a couple of sites you might find of interest:

http://www.zabasearch.com/

http://www.spokeo.com/

Just plug in your name and see what pop's, you might be surprised.

If I knew your email address I could probably find your house.

OK when I signed up on this site (computing.net) a few years back. I was a noob and I used my real name. That was a big mistake I know. I tried to change it but was unable to.

Just because the OP does not come back in 3 or 4 days to reply, does not mean he will not come back and reply.
