Hey Guys,

As you might have noticed, we are now allowing the use of avatars on Computing.Net. This will help users identify themselves better on the site. Right now, the avatar just shows up on your user information page, but it will soon appear as a small icon next to your posting name. Please feel free to setup your avatar in the My Computing.Net Settings area. If you do not site an avatar, one of a few cool looking Identicons will be assigned to you.

Thank you!
Justin

Cool idea!

Are there restrictions on the type or size of file we can use for an avatar?

Hey,

It must be either a JPEG or PNG (GIF will work too). It will be converted to a non-transparent JPEG, so it can't have any transparency or animation in it. It also cannot be larger than 45k. Otherwise, no real restrictions. It'll be converted to a square 100x100 and 28x28, so its best to upload a square 100x100 (or at least that big).

I just tried to upload a 33 KB .jpg file.

When I clicked the "set/change" button, it flashed "error on page" and then "done" at the bottom of my IE (v8) and I can't see the image on my user info page.

Hey Curt R,

You're right, the script wasn't compatible with any version of IE. I believe I have fixed it. Is it working now?

Thanks,
Justin

Works for me now on IE9 (wasn't working earlier).

ijack,

Yup, I see your avatar. I'm sure this system is going to have kinks just because there are so many possibilities of what people can do.

I'm thinking it worked this time. I tried it, didn't see the avatar image so thought I might have messed up or it's my version of IE so I opened Mozilla and tried with it and got a message saying the image had already been uploaded and was waiting for approval.

Hey,

Yeah, it must have worked in IE if that happened. Maybe I will bold the message so its more clear.

Thanks Justin. This is sort of neat I guess. A little personalization.

It worked once the image was approved. Now to find something you can actually make out without using a magnifying glass........LOL

@Curt R: It only looks like the default patterns are the ones you can see without the magnifying glass :).

I am using Safari 5 Mac PPC and if I hover mouse cursor over Avatar, a bigger picture is shown in a "pop out"

Googling is quicker than waiting for an answer....

Hi,

Jolicloud is correct. On hovering, you should see the big avatar. Also, if you click on the user page, you will see the larger one. I wanted to maintain the usability of the site without putting too much emphasis on the avatars, that is why they are small.

Cool, now I'll leave my skull there instead of looking for something easier to see.

So Justin, at the risk of being a pest..........would it be possible for us to keep a small collection of avatars? Like, would it be possible to say upload 5 or 10 (or whatever number) and then once you've approved them, be able to swap between them at will?

Just a thought....if it's a lot of hassle, dont' worry about it.

TIA.

Curt R,

I think that would be a little complex to both build out and also for users to understand. I mean, you can always upload a new avatar, and I approve them really quickly... So don't worry about changing them around if you want.

Plus, I always thought the idea of the Avatar was to be recognizable to other users really easily, so changing it might defeat the purpose. However, if you want to change it up every once in a while, that's fine with me. Just submit them normally.

Thanks!
Justin

And here I was going to ask if we could switch avatars now and again or if it was going to be a one off kind of thing. Thanks Curt R now I don't have to ask.

LOL likely my pleasure!

I like to change my wallpaper from time to time too. Not every stinking day mind you, but every now and then so that's why I asked.

I have a couple mutt's I rather like and will probably eventually swap to a nice picture of the 3 of them......

Thanks for the info Justin. I had a feeling it would be more hassle than it was worth.

Curt R,

Definitely not, I imagine I'll have to review at least 5-10 avatars per day... so a few extra every once in a while from you wouldn't matter.
