I wouldn't want to work here this week...

I just called the Financial Aid office at my daughter's college.

Tuition for the next 2 semesters is due by Friday and my daughter just received an adjusted TAP award letter from NYS. I call to inquire about the current balance owed to the school.

Here's how the conversation went:

1 - The "updated" TAP award letters we recently received from NYS appear to have erroneous award amounts for many students. Until this issue is cleared up, the rep at the FA office can't really tell me how much my daughter's award is, so she is suggesting that we pay the amount shown prior to the new award letter and we'll figure out the difference later.

2 - OK, I don't have the previous figure with me. Can you tell me how much to pay? "Sorry our systems crashed this morning and we have no access to any student records. Hopefully it will up sometime this afternoon."

How would you like to work for a college on the Wednesday before school opens and not be able to access any student records - class schedules, financial aid, housing, etc.?

Thursday and Friday are going to be h*ll for them!

In a case like that, I'd rather be working in the Financial Aid Office as compared to say, the IT department. A major system crash at a time like that likely means someone, or several someone's, will be looking for work in a week or so.

I am the captain of my soul.
