How I saved my computer...

Dell Optiplex gx270 sff desktop

Specs: Windows XP Home Edition, Intel Pentium 4 With 4 Gigabytes RAM
So in the following post, the post describes what happened to my old computer...

http://www.computing.net/answers/ha...

I opened up the computer today after the screen went black, and all input devices stopped working, but the computer was still on. It ended up that the caps were all bulging looking like they were about to burst. So I officially retired that computer. I took the HDD out, and put it into my backup desktop. Even though the configurations on both computers are different, somehow Windows XP figured out how to detect and install all of the new drivers by itself. So I did not have to reinstall any programs or any drivers except for the Network Driver.

That is the miraculous story of how I saved my computer.

How about listing the spec differences between the 2 machines? the motherboards or the chipsets being the most important.

If you want the specs, here they are:

Old Computer:
Dell Optiplex GX270 Slimline
Windows XP Home Edition SP3
Pentium 4 @ 3.2 GHz
4GB RAM
128MB Nvidia Geforce FX5200

New Computer:
Dell Dimension 8300
OS Moved Over
Pentium 4 HT @ 3.00 GHz
1.5GB RAM
32MB ATI Radeon 7500 Family

Also my Office 2010 is acting up. It says it wants to reactivate because the Hardware Configuration has changed. Then it says that my license is already in use. I tried uninstalling it from the old computer, then reinstalling it on the new computer, but it just won't work. Any ideas?

This thread belongs in the Hardware or WinXP forum, not the lounge.

Likely, XP itself will eventually do that as well, probably within 4 months. You'll need to re-activate (call MS and explain). And yes, this does need to be in another forum...
