I previously submitted a question on Computing.net. I just received an email telling me that I failed to pick a "Best answer". No one answer solved my problem, but from the many folks who did respond, I was able to formulate what I needed to do.

I think it is unfair to always pick a "best answer". More times than not, no one person provides a best answer, but a combination of all answers turned out to be best.

Furthermore, when you ask "Pick a category", what category should I pick to ask a general question -- like this one?

✔ Best Answer
First off, you don't have to pick a "best answer" No mafia goon is going to show up on your door with a baseball bat in hand if you choose not to.

LOL

I'm not sure but I suspect you'll only get the one reminder to pick a best answer.

What you could do is go back to the question you asked, post what you did to fix the issue and then select that as your "best answer" I know as a mod, whenever I come across a thread where the OP answers their own question and is kind enough to submit the fix, I always make those "best answer"

The whole point of "best answer" is to make it easier for someone else searching problems on this site to find accurate, helpful information without having to read through every single response on a thread. Some of those threads can get quite long.

With regard to category, when it doubt, pick "general"

It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

BobotK,

Curt R is correct. If there is no best answer, then there is no need to pick one. You won't get another e-mail asking you to set a best answer (on that thread). Now, you will get an e-mail for each thread you create that you haven't set a best answer for. If you want to turn this reminder off, go into "My Home" in the top right of the header, select "Settings," uncheck "E-mail me about my postings and replies." and save.

As Curt R said though, if you can select a best answer, it is always a nice gesture to do it. It helps future users and also helps the person who answered you to know that the solution worked.

Thanks!
Justin

Which thread is the one you don't think has a best answer? You have a current thread that you have not responded to. Is that the one?

The email I received addressed the prior thread (looking for help with FDISK and FORMAT for Win 7). I have picked a best answer there and that thread is now closed.

This thread can now also be closed since I have picked a best answer here. It's easier picking the best answer now that I know how to do it.

Thanks to everyone who participated in these two threads.
