Forum Hover Over Drop Down Bug

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, 2.8 GHz / 2.0 Gb
I'm using IE6 at work (no comments please, there's nothing I can do about that)

OK, for this to occur I have to be on one of the 1.html pages:

http://www.computing.net/forum/offi...
http://www.computing.net/forum/thel...
etc.

When I hover over the first 2 "Forums" drop down lists (Specialty Forums or General Forums) the drop down appears and it extends down low enough that it should hide the "Unanswered" "Learning Center" "FAQ" "ASK A QUESTION" row of links, but it doesn't.

At that point (e.g. over the word Unanswered) the link shows through the drop down. In other words, I can see the word Unanswered behind the drop down.

If I slide my cursor down through the list, as soon as it hits the link (Unanswered, FAQ, etc.) the drop down disappears.

Therefore, I can't get to anything below Database in the Specialty Forum drop down or anything below Linux in the General forum drop down because the drop down goes away before I can get to them.

The Products drop down works fine because it is a short list.

Anybody else run into this?

Hey,

That's an issue with IE6, I can't fix it. I tried my best to make the design work in IE6, but there were a few points that simply could not be resolved.

As for IE8, that doesn't happen to me in it. It shouldn't be happening in that browser.

Justin,

Thanks for the comments on IE6, I completely understand.

However, I have a similar (well, somewhat similar) problem with FF.

When viewing a thread page, such as this one, certain banner ads (the ones just below the drop down row) also cause problems with the drop downs.

I don't see the ad through the drop down like I do in IE6, in fact the ad disappears as soon as the drop down drops, but once my cursor enters the area where the ad was, the drop down closes and the ad reappears.

One such ad is the neustar ad that is on this page as I'm typing (in FF 3.6.8) . I can't get to any link in the General Forums or Products drop down.

This same problem occurs in IE6 but I didn't mention when I posted my original question, hoping that the fix to the original problem would fix both issues.

Again, this problem is also happening if FF 3.6.8.

Hey,

I believe I fixed that. If you hold down control and hit F5 to do a full reload, you should get the new javascript that will fix it in FF so that all the ads will disappear when you hover over the menus.

Mike,

Are you sure you aren't using IE7 when that happens to you? I found out it happens on 6 and 7 but not 8. I'll research if there is anyway to fix it, but no promises.

Now I know why I have been unable to experience the Hover Over Drop Down Bug. I'm running IE8 on XP, Vista, & W7 boxes.

re: "new javascript that will fix it in FF so that ads will disappear when you hover over the menus."

Thanks I will keep an eye on it since it did not happen with all ads.

I just want to clarify something:

The ads were disappearing when the drop down dropped, but they came right back as soon as I tried to scroll down the drop down. It was almost as if the real estate that the ad took up took priority over the drop down.

I'll let you know if that problem comes back.

Thanks again

Jason:

The problem still exists but seems to be isolated to the green neustar ad.

I can use the drop down fine unless the neustar ad is displayed. iRobot, Reynolds, CafeMom, etc. all work fine.

neustar prohibits the use of the General Forums and Products drop down. I wonder if it's because of its "Roll over to expand feature"?

XpUser,

Ok, thanks for the confirmation, that's what I figured.

DerbyDad,

Did you do the reload as I outlined? I had heard that it even fixed the issue with the neustar from another user.

Justion:

Yes, I reloaded via Ctrl-F5, I restarted my browser, I restarted my machine and - ready for this? - I drove 300 miles to Mom's house and tried it on her machine.

I found the same problem with the neustar ad on her machine in both FF 3.6.3 and IE7.

I reloaded the page over and over, getting different ads. They all seem to work fine, except for the neustar ad. The neustar ad prohibits the choosing of any item in the General Forums or Products drop down because the drop down disappears and the neustar ad comes back as soon as the cursor enters the real estate area reserved for the ad.

P.S. No, I didn't drive 300 miles just to test the drop downs! Dad wanted to go to the UMASS (he's an alumnus) football home opener, so my family drove over to go with him. A back and forth game, ending in a 27 - 23 victory for the MinuteMen!

Hey,

Oh, ok... Thanks for testing that out for me. Unfortunately, I don't believe I'll be able to fix that problem with that ad. This is especially true right now because that ad never loads for me, so I can't look at the internals of it.

As for the IE6 problem on forum thread pages, I think I can fix that on Tuesday.

Justin,

I think I must have spoken too soon last Friday (RE: Post 6 above).

The drop down do appears in IE8 in XP, Vista & Win7 boxes whenever I hover the mouse curssor over the first three items on the forum menu bar - Specialty Forums, General Forums, & Products. Drop down doesn't happen with Geek.Dict, How-tos, and Drivers Is this the way you wanted it to work?

XpUser,

Yes, that is supposed to happen. The problem is that, on IE6 and 7, the dropdowns were appearing underneath the "UNANSWERED", "FAQ," etc links on the main forum listing pages. However, I believe I have fixed it now.

Thanks for the update,
Justin

Justin, you said:

I saved the source for the page when the neustar ad loaded. Will that help you in anyway?

I can email it or post it in a PM.

Hi,

No, that won't help because the ad is loaded via javascript each time. The ad server chooses which ad to display, the source of the page doesn't change.

It's interesting that you never see the neustar ad. I can reload/refresh and see it quite often.

Hey,

Maybe its targeted in some way that excludes my region. I'm not sure.

I say that in all seriousness.

Hey,

Everything might be a bit of an overstatement. I wouldn't want to claim I know everything about anything :)

In all seriousness though, I don't know very much about individual advertising running on the site. That's not really something I'm involved with. I put up the code, but the ad server targets it.

OK, then please write some to code to take me off of the target list for the nuestar ad. ;-)

Actually, it's kind of interesting on the variability of the problem.

On my IE6 machine at work, I can get to the Windows XP link under General Forums, but nothing else because the drop down disappears once I enter the ad's real estate.

On my dad's IE7 machine, I can get to the XP link, and if I pull the cursor down fast enough, I can get to everything below Windows 95/98 since that is outside of the real estate range of the ad. If I go slow, the drop down disappears as I enter the real estate.

On that machine, I can't get to Vista, 7 or 95/98 because they are right in ad's space.

I wonder is it has something to do with the speed of the machine. My Dad's machine is much slower, so maybe it doesn't react in time.

Hey,

I just think, when that ad is up, you'll have to use the forum links in the right sidebar.

Can you confirm the other problem (the UNANSWERED, FAQ, etc appearing on top of he drop downs in IE6/7) has been fixed?

Yeah, sorry.

Forgot to mention that (it's been a long weekend!)

No problem in IE6 with the drop downs on the 1.html pages anymore.

Thanks!
