Hi all, This week's poll question is about the release of Microsoft's Windows 10. Discuss here your thoughts on the latest operating system, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.
Thanks,
Justin
I have seen YouTube videos on it and I just don't like it. I had Windows 8 installed in Virtual Box and did not like that. So, I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and that was worse. I thought that they were supposed to put the START button back in and it goes right back to those ugly square apps that I never use. I want programs not apps. Anyway, Windows 10 still has those ugly apps. Yeah, it has a START button, but why have the Apps too? I can respect that Microsoft wants to break into the tablet market and the Windows 8 GUI is perfect for that, but what about the old desktop and laptop users? Just a suggestion...maybe Microsoft should care about the consumer and offer a choice of which GUI to use. the Windows 95 style GUI for desktops and laptops and the Windows 8 GUI for touchsceen tablets.
But hey, what do I know...I'm a Linux fanboy.

Watching a YouTube video and actually experiencing Win 10 are two different things. I have it on a spare drive and it is good, maybe it needs a bit of fine tuning but that will come, AND the Start menu is back and better than before in my opinion
That's good. Why they initially decided to get rid of the START button is beyond me. Maybe this OS will be good . Time will tell . Don C
Why they initially decided to get rid of the START button is beyond me Microsoft tried to explain the reasons four years ago in a Building Windows 8 blog in 2,750 words.

OK. You guys win. Windows is AWESOME! Don C
"But hey, what do I know...I'm a Linux fanboy." With all due respect, if you haven't actually tried Windows 10 then I'd say (on this subject) "not a lot".
I'm using Win 8.1 fine without an old style start menu and have a job to understand why this was ever such a big issue. If you can't live without it, most likely the classic shell freebie and others will run on Win 10 (eventually if not now). EDIT:
Can't comment about Win 10 itself because I'm holding off until the main bugs are out of it.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Can't comment about Win 10 itself because I'm holding off until the main bugs are out of it. You meant you are holding off until MS issue Windows 10 Service Pack 1 approximately 19 months from now - based on Windows 7 Timeline?

Aha - but that means I pay for it LOL. Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
Speaking of Paying for Windows, one of my testbed computers upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 is already asking me to pay MS either $109 for Windows 10 Home or $199 for Windows 10 Pro. But Hey today is Sunday I am not in the mood to debug it. I admit I must have done something wrong by not wishing to wait weeks to get my Windows 10 upgrade notification. At my age Waiting weeks agonize me. i_Xp/Vista/W7User

Yeah, I know what you mean, although it's now 3 weeks since my mini-stroke and last time I checked I was still standing.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
Count your blessings just like I do mine every day. I survived two surgeries to correct potential health problems detected just on time i_Xp/Vista/W7User

Yes indeed - there's always someone worse off.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
Did my desktop on the 29th and only needed to download the drivers for my HD7770 from AMD. Did 2 laptops today (a Dell and a Hp) both running 8.1 with no problems at all. All using the upgrade route. Skip

My upgrade from Win 7 Pro went pretty well. I enjoy the new start menu and the overall look. The only issue I had was that the upgrade trashed my Bitdefender Total Security install. A quick repair from the control panel fixed the problem. As far as I can tell, everything else is fully functional. All device drivers were successfully installed. Steam games work well. Bring on Direct x 12. ~winipcfg

Hey Derek - I guess you need to check THIS out - the hefty Windows 10 update issued today (the 7th day after July 29 RTM) will give yourself a pat on your back for holding off upgrading your Windows so soon. I am sure we will see more like this happen again and again...until the World Congress declare Windows 10 is Stable LOL i_Xp/Vista/W7User

Thanks XpUser Yep I did read about "the big one" but thanks for the heads up anyhow. I shan't rush but for a few weeks/months - I'll just keep an eye on how folk are getting on with it.
Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
I upgraded a few days ago and the upgrade went without a hitch. nothing was lost and all my apps work perfectly. I think it is a great system and its going to be around for a long time. in another post I asked about the Windows Old folder and that has since been sorted so all is well
Regards
Late edit: I do hate the "automatic update" though. I like to pick and choose!
