Hi all,

This week's poll question is about news that Star Trek is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Discuss here if you think the show has had a big impact on current technology, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.

I remember stumbling across Star Trek when I was a kid in the late 60's. Back then there were only 3 stations to choose from & no remote controls, so I was sitting on the floor in front of the TV & twisting the knob. It must have already been in syndication because I'm sure it was a Saturday afternoon. Anyhow, I came across the show & I remember thinking how stupid it looked, but there was nothing else to watch so I took a seat on the couch. Needless to say, I got hooked & became a fan.

I don't know how much an impact the show had on technology. I guess communicators could be cell phones & phasers could be stun guns, but I think warp drive, teleporters, & photon torpedoes are still a ways off.

I doubt star trek has spurred new technology but rather when something new is invented it's often compared to something from star trek ('Oh look this new doohickey they invented is like the tricorder from star trek').

I remember kids in junior high thinking they could do the 'vulcan nerve pinch'.

The touch-screen tablet PC was first seen in star trek. 40 years before it was available to us mere mortals. Just one of the imaginative innovations that have become common-place.
