Hi all,

This week's poll question is about reports that more and more people are using voice to make online searches. Discuss here if you think typing will be a replaced any time soon, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.

Thanks,
Justin

imagine the words "four candles" and "fork handles" where the latter is pronounced as "fork 'andles" (the "h" being dropped as is done by more than a few...)

What would voice/speech recpgnition make of that?

Those in the UK will recall the famous and very funny (and cleverly written) comedy sketch around "four candles" and " fork 'andles"... performed by Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett.

I do some strange things but I've not yet got to the stage where I talk to my computer.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

A lot of closed captioning for TV is done using voice recognition software, especially when updating older shows that weren't originally set up that way. I often get a good laugh at the text that comes up on the screen compared to what was actually said.

Oh yes.. there are some howlers at times with some closed captions that are generated "live" as it were from an accompanying live voice; rather than being properly created and verified beforehand (as in movie subtitles etc.)

Such as:
The politician gave full details of their plans........
coming out as:
The politician gave four detours of their plans.
[With politicians, the latter being more credible than the former]

Or...MTBF coming out as Empty BF.

Or...It will take four to five weeks to get something done.
coming out as:
It will take fortyfive weeks to get something done.

All three are based on verbal misunderstandings I've run into.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I didn't grow up with today's technology.
It sounds weird taking to a machine.
Rather push buttons.
Old habits die hard.

"Bad robots" comes to mind
