Hi all,

This week's poll is about the ongoing debate as to whether or not online sales should escape sales tax charges in the US. Discuss here if you think this exception should be allowed to continue, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.

Thanks!
Justin

I voted 'Yes', but as I'm in the UK I probably shouldn't have voted, though there's a similar issue here with Amazon and vat. On-line retailers already have a big advantage because they aren't paying for bricks & mortar retail outlets, and as a result there are empty units in just about every town these days. So whilst I like having cheap prices, I don't think they should be to the detriment of local businesses.

I would gladly pay sales tax if I could get similar pricing at a brick and mortar store. I have recently bought some electronic items from Costco.com. I did pay Michigan sales tax as that is the rule if the merchant has a presence in your state. Usually the tax and the shipping can cancel each other out.

Another issue is getting state of the art stuff and having a good selection. Even the online versions of the big box stores do not meet those requirements.

I guess I am saying the local merchants must learn how to do business in a changing world.

I bought some shoes at Sears recently. They did not have my size in stock so the sales person ordered them online. I got the sale price and did not pay shipping. That is an example of how to compete. I would never buy apparel online without first seeing the merchandise.

"Even the online versions of the big box stores do not meet those requirements."

Amen to that. Given that I can find everything and then some on Amazon vs. a Wal-Mart, I'd pick Amazon every day of the week. Only visit Wally World now for stuff I gotta have that day (and sure that they have it).

I voted no. At the moment I am of the mindset that if you’re telling me my not paying sales tax is hurting anyone then I am saying cut out some of the wasted tax dollars to cover it. I know I don't have a leg to stand on but I am seeing too much wasted on frivolous or personal “STUFF” to be willing to just roll over and hand them more.

I agree taxes are a necessity to keep our government running and have no issues at all paying for that but the waste is piling up faster than the tax dollars these days.
Example: Local county commissioner needs to take a trip to England and Spain supposedly to discuss some sort of trade agreement. Give me a break. He has to go right before the Olympics started? His entire family has to go (supposedly he is paying all their expenses)? This county has less than 200,000 people in it. It’s my opinion that the county commissioners are already grossly overpaid as it is. There is no “International” business here. Our largest industry in this area is the military. He has already been approved for roughly $1 million in expenses. Cut out this kind of “STUFF” and sales tax will be easy.

We all know sales tax is just the governments’ way of saying “You thought we screwed you when you got paid. Now go and try and spend what we left you.”

I voted no, because I usually pay sales tax when I do my taxes at the end of the year. This way I am only paying michigan sales tax, instead of whatever city taxes and state taxes some other state has.

To be exact. Almost every state requires you to pay sales tax on new and sometimes used interstate purchased products. Everyone that is not paying it for online sales is breaking the law.

We had a state senator that was accused of buying a ring in Mexico and they charged him with all sorts of taxes and fines. So, you too can get caught.

I don't know what is fair but we all have to pay taxes unless you are some kind of kook that doesn't believe in tax.

Nobody I know of "likes" paying taxes. We do it because we have NO CHOICE.

Pay taxes or go to jail.....it's that simple.

If people liked doing it, the government wouldn't have made it a federal offense to not do so.

Admit it, you were the kid who would raise his hand at the end of class and yelled out, "Teacher, you didn't give us a homework assignment" weren't you!

And before you decide to take offense at that last bit about homework, you called me, and pretty much the rest of the entire world, a "kook" first.

I am the captain of my soul.
