Hi all,

This week's poll question is about news that Microsoft has acquired the developer of Minecraft for $2.5 billion. Discuss here how you think this will affect Minecraft going forward, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.

Thanks,
Justin

According to the news, Microsoft has a lot of money overseas, and can't bring it to the US without paying taxes on it. Hence the desire to buy something that's a big hit with Americans, but not actually from America.

Microsoft says they plan to make the money back within a fiscal year, but no one knows how. Console versions are $20, PC's $27, and mobile's $7. There isn't a license fee for the servers, and I wouldn't count on merchandise. Everyone who'd be interested has to own a copy by now, right?

Initially, I saw media pundits talk about the price being $X per player, but that's silly since these aren't people plugging personal data into a database for harvesting. Probably why I can't find a backing article now.

I've seen talk about how this is a bid to make MS cool with the 13-year-old demographic, but they already have the XBox brand and 14-year-olds don't care who owns the rights to whatever game they're playing.

Notch, for his part, seems like he felt he was in over his head and has wanted out. So good on MS for offering that. Now he can spend his time fooling around with programming without worrying about living expenses for a long time.
