Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's smartphone division is the natural end of the process started with Nokia embracing Win Phone for Lumia operating system. This may burst Microsoft market share in the smartphone battlefield, but probably signs an epocal turn in IT industry marking the definitively supremacy of mobile devices over laptops and desktops. A transition much like PCs vs mainframes and dumb terminals. Microsoft will have to fight hard to survive in that alien environment.

I just keep picturing in my mind thousands of smartphone users standing around waiting for their devices to reboot after they froze up or just re-started at random.

I had earlier Windows smartphones primarily because they had Outlook installed which meant that syncing was seamless. Then, in the way that Microsoft does, it suddenly decided that Outlook wasn't needed and everyone should start using webmail on their mobiles instead. They didn't even have any apps that would let you sync Outlook data unless you were on Exchange.

As a result I found that both Android and iphones would happily work with Outlook so I haven't gone back to Windows phone since, and I never intend to.

In much the same way that Microsoft are arrogant enough to assume everyone will want a Windows 8 'Surface', they will do the same with the phone OS and just not give the consumer what they want.
