Hi all,

This week's poll question is about news that Kaspersky announced it does not think Apple takes iOS security seriously. Discuss here if you think Apple needs to step up its security, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.

Thanks!
Justin

By glancing at the article, it says Kaspersky is upset that Apple won't allow them to provide software to protect iOS. They actually won't let any vendors into their system. Kaspersky says it's only a matter of time before hackers hit the system. I don't know enough about these things to say they will or won't. I can say that Kaspersky and the other vendors are far more concerned about the mega bucks they could make with software for the iOS than what security flaws it has. The bottom line is always money. Period.

Apple OS market share is rising, it is true Karpersky wants money from Apple users but it is also true Apple OS isn't secured anymore(remember flashback virus). Another problem is users trusting Apple, there is problem of users not updating their software. May be security firms are cooking nasty virus in their labs and the bottom line is nothing is complete secured.

For those who don't want to read the linked article, Karpersky's CTO is complaining the iOS doesn't allow them to perform the operations they want. Whether this is scheduling a task or hooking low level OS functions, I do not know.

Is iOS Vulnerable? Yes; jail breaking proves iOS security isn't impenetrable.

Will the iPhone/iPad become the new target for virus authors? Probably; I don't know why it hasn't been seriously targeted yet.

Is a traditional anti-virus the way to go? I hope not.

I have seen that news for several weeks now(I read Tom's news everytime). Previously(end of april) Kaspersky said Apple is 10 years benind MS when it comes to security.
My post is about Apple OS and not iOS only(both phone and desktop OS).

Well yeah. For the past 5 years, you'd be hard pressed to find any rational IT person who claims OS/x isn't more vulnerable. It's just less desirable because there aren't enough hipsters out there to justify the cost. That's boring.

iOS is newer, and thus more interesting. At this point, I'm just waiting for an iOS worm to come along, because that would be interesting, if just for the reactions from Apple and the tech press.

That would be interesting, because Apple's denial would lead to inaction, and inaction, or the perception thereof, would lead to people moving away from a "virus laden phone."

Who would pick up the slack? Android? (Probably) Blackberry? (Unlikely) Windows Phone? (Irony)

Apple can get away with anything.

I would say Android and Windows Phone. Blackberry has dark future.

Oh, I don't know about that. Perhaps Apple under Jobs could do no wrong, but that isn't an option anymore. Then there's those out to "prove" Apple is doomed without Jobs. In any case, I just want to see the market shaken up, because I'm like that.
