Hi all,

This week's poll question is about a newly released study showing most users are confused by Internet privacy tools. Discuss how important Internet privacy is to you, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.

Thanks!
Justin

The average user can't possibly understand the depth of the subject & related tools but most of them don't really care. If they did, facebook wouldn't have so many users.

How do you know when a politician is lying? His mouth is moving.

That's about the long and the short of it. Most people expect Internet privacy to be the equivalent of leaving your bedroom curtains wide open while you do what you do in the bedroom and expecting people to respect your privacy by not looking in. If they can, they will.

Every time you log onto an Internet web site, even a relatively private one like this, you surrender a little bit of privacy. With some you give it away by the bucketful without even knowing it. Common seance and understanding are the best tools.

I totally agree even though I am probably in the middle when it comes to understanding the use of the tools and the entire issue in general. I have worked with many aftermarket firewalls and what have you and for my at home personal use I find them just too cumbersome. I do use the firewall provided by MS but have turned some of the settings down to make browsing easier. At the same time though I am a little more diligent than many I suspect when it comes to what I put online. I know that doesn't at all mean I am safe.
I do believe though that just about any usage can leave a trail back to me. At one time I paid most of my bills online but I stopped that a couple years ago. The one thing that bothers me (for the lack of a better phrase) is that many employers now require you to apply online. There is a great deal of personal information in an application. Sure the employer has systems in place to protect privacy but can I be sure the information is not taken on my end. If someone wants to hack into my little network I am sure there are ways that I would never notice.
While I feel I have a decent understand of computers I am by no means some guru or hacker or whatever word would be used for someone that could easily get into my system without my knowledge. I no longer check my bank balance online for fear that someone could use cookies stored on my machine to figure a way into my accounts.

Don't worry about it at all.

-I use a modern, sandboxed browser that gets updated daily by Google (yeah, I know, Google and the NSA, blah blah. Unfortunately I don't have my tin foil hat on today)

-I don't do enough silly stuff on the 'Net to have anything to hide from my boss or anyone else. I don't use Facebook or Twitter. My YouTube and Flickr channels are family friendly. I don't use torrents or p2p.

-Automatic Update enabled, MSE installed, Windows 7 fully up-to-date. And Microsoft these days just seems hell-bent on keeping Windows users safe and secure. I'm truly impressed with how fast they respond to new Windows/Office threats.

-I feel that a 12-incher would do more harm than good, so I don't click on each link the spammers send me. Besides, 11.5" is more than enough. Badum-tsh!

I haven't had one of them for ages. Perhaps they have found out how old I am and consider me to be a lost cause.

@StuartS......ya, they seem to know. One day bigger, thicker, stronger and the next viagara and cheap prescriptions....wondering what the end stage is? Hair growth formulas and coupons on for depends undergarments? I digress. I try and give folks practical advise....look for https and lil padlock......would a firewall help me.....it may hide your id, but frankly if someone was hacking you....you'd most likely just let them right in anyway, cause yes, yes, yes means go and no means stop.....they agree to everything.....so I think it's like encouraging safety on the bumper cars and I'm the traffic cop.....help fix the scrape ups and send em on their way. Hope for the best....wave bye bye too em'!!!
