Hi all,

This week's poll question is about news that Google plans to soon release its self driving cars onto public roads. Discuss here if you think these cars are ready to operate on real roads, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.

In my opinion self driving cars are still toys for engineers and far away from day by day use. Google should put away its Google Glass and stop to confuse real life with sci-fi.

A self drive vehicle on an isolated lane might be ok... But we already have that to some extent... They're called trams or street cars... Although there is of course a human in attendance incase "sumat" happens and the self drive can't cope...

And can you just see the lawyers having a field day with insurance claims, and other liability issues...

Questionable though some humans may be behind the wheel... I'd still prefer a human control over a computer in standard mixed lanes and traffic.

The proximity control mechanism on some Mercedes, Jags, Fords, to name but three, are useful; can help reduce tail gating etc... But they still leave the driver involved overall.

Strange one. What we have now is a whole stack of independent and unreliable computers (people) driving on common highways, often bi-directional, with precious little segregation. Adding vehicles with better computers (software) to the mix is an interesting one.

No engineer would ever design anything remotely like it.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Sounds like that would virtually eliminate road rage. Empty cars can't fight with each other. With the millions of cars on the road now and more to come in the future, I don't think you'll ever see this happen. I agree with Ivo. It's just sci-fi.

Is there going to be a Google Rescue if the self-driving cars leave you in a ditch or get you lost in Deliverance country?
