Hi all,

This week's poll question is about the newly released Google Buzz social networking service. Discuss here if you think this can hurt other sites such as Facebook, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.

Thanks!
Justin

I'm sure it will be another fine social networking site, just like all the others, that I will never use.

How do you know when a politician is lying? His mouth is moving.

First I've heard of it. Not likely to be of any interest, or use to me.

I thought "Useless" was a good answer in the poll but had to vote for "Haven't heard of it" because I haven't.

guapo and Curt said it all...

I don't care for it myself & would hardly miss it if it faded into oblivion.

However, I think it is disingenuous to call it a useless idea. I'm pretty sure JW will trade both of his kidneys & one of his nuts in a heartbeat in return for getting close to half a BILLION "active" users on this site.

The impact of a social networking utility like Facebook only seems subjective, obviously, because it's a generational concept. Their niche is the 18-35 year old demographics & they are doing just fine catering to that audience, much like Linkedin, MySpace, Bebo & so on.

Didn't M$ pay close to a quarter of a billion dollars for a 1.6% equity stake in the company couple of years ago?

I wonder if Google should concentrate on keeping Gmail up and running instead of opening another application they may not be able to support?

I think they are too late to the party if the goal is to be the number one in social media. If they are ok with a lesser ranking in this space, well more power to them. It's readily apparent that this is just another way for them to expand their influence beyond search.

I think Google may have shot themselves in the foot in this instance;

I think looking at the bottom line, which I am sure is all anyone at google cares about, they will do just fine. I am sure they don't at all care about social networking just how many eyes they can say stare at the ad space they will provide to advertisers which is where the money comes from. A billion dollars is a billion dollars regardless of being rated the best site. My wife and her friends use facebook for now (flavor of the month). After a while they will move on to something else much like when they moved from myspace. Maybe the next flavor will be buzz maybe something else. I've tried a few of these sites and just get tired of responding to people I don't know or don't want to chat with not to mention I have run into a few viruses on a couple sites.

I am also in the never heard of it crowd.
