Hi all,

This week's poll question is about news that Dell has officially gone private. Discuss here if you think switching from a public to private company will allow Dell to better compete, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.

Thanks!
Justin

The article didn't give the reason behind the decision but my guess is the recent government shutdown had something to do with it. It caused some temporary instability in the markets & it can happen again.

Nah, it's been in the works for months now.

Dell the company has been struggling for years. Dell the man wanted to come back and save his company, but he felt the focus on short-term profit would doom it before whatever reforms he's planning were put in place. The solution was to take shareholders out of the equation.

Really sad to see them struggle; they used to make the most solid machines around (still have an OptiPlex from 1999 still going strong). But the good machines were made in the US/Japan---does it really surprise anyone that they've made junk since moving desktop production to China?

Yeah, it amazed me when I went back to Dell.com in September to get my current Inspiron 7720 that there was a COMPLETE lack of any customization options for any computers other than the high end Alienwares. Seems like it's all now the typical pre-built OEM, stuff that I could get from any other computer manufacturer. Maybe now Dell the man will open up the customization options again.
