Solved Any chance of a two way mail client on the site?

Specs: Linux i686), 2GB
It would really great to be able to see sent messages to other users. As sometimes users don't answer for days and it's a struggle to remember what was said in our sent msg's.
Saves users giving out private email addys to strangers.

Something like the Message Centre that you'll find in My Home?

The one that doesn't show your sent msg's?

Ah, I see what you mean.

Actually, I'm not a great fan of PMs on forums as it's more useful for everyone to see replies to a problem. (PMs can be useful for very quick one-off messages but otherwise I think they go against the spirit of forums.)

I only ask, because over the past year or so I have made some excellent friends. Who I would like to talk to more fluently with, without long waits between reply's. I understand the bit about "spirit of forums" if it wasn't meant to be used and used well? Why is it here at all?
I have used the inbuilt msg center to chat with Justin when problems have come up, which do not effect the forum. And user/friends who have helped with forum trolls problems or just general about the weather in your part of the world? Stuff that won't rock the forums core. Maybe just make us work more as a team instead of separated individuals.
I know I could send my email addy but, I don't go around just giving it out to people unless I really, really know them well.

I thought that was what Facebook was for, communicating !

Googling is quicker than waiting for an answer....

MrGoodguy,

I understand what you mean, and I agree it can be frustrating. I'll consider doing something like this. However, the system was really just designed to give short messages back and forth. If you are using it for long chats, I tend to agree with Jolicloud that you should use something like Facebook or just plain e-mail. Either way, I suppose it wouldn't be too difficult to create a "sent messages" folder. I'll look into it over the next week or two!

Sent messages folder sounds like a neat idea if you can pull it off.

Hi Justin,

while you are giving thought to the pm's, kindly consider the following:-

it is not obvious sending a pm facility exists.
Seem to recall previously there was a 'send pm' option by the post or by the posters name.

Thanks and regards - Mike

PM is available. Just click on the posters name and then name again, and the option appears.

Mike,

Yeah, what OtheHill said is correct. I realize it might not be quite as obvious, but that is sort of a standard design in forums nowadays. I think it looks a lot better. Remember, users are alerted on every page when they have a PM, so they should be aware the feature exists if they get one. If not, they most likely won't need it anyway.

A neat bit of work. I'm sure this new facility will prove most useful.

Thanks Justin

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hi Justin, please consider again the *two* points in my message #10.

If one is unaware (as I was) that clicking on the posters name, on two subsequent webpages leads to a pm facility, when there is no indication of such, it could be somewhat of a struggle for the less experienced finding.

I use other websites/forums (e.g. ebay) and all indicate/name the link, for sending messages etc. Not one of them requires the sender having to guess the process.

The outbox is useful, have already used it, thanks.

Regards - Mike

Mike

I am not sure that making PM easier to use is a good idea. I already get users PMing me for individual help.

The solution to that is to be as unhelpful as possible (like me). I get less than 3 PMs a year.
