Oh good lord there is a night time Blue Angels air show going on. There base is about 3 miles as the crow flies from us. It sounds like a bombing run is being made here. The blues are required to be so many miles out over the gulf when they break the sound barrier and it still shakes the entire house really bad when they do. The show is just finishing up now so I feel like I have just walked into a beatnik drum solo.

Last year, on a Friday afternoon, a volunteer group that I am part of was setting up for a Saturday event on a road that ran along the lake.

As part of the city wide events the next day, the Blue Angels were going to do their air show about 3 miles from where we were. We were hoping that being up above the lake, we'd get a pretty good view of the air show, without the massive crowds.

Little did we know that the Blue Angels were going to practice their maneuvers right where we were that Friday. We got our own private air show, including a sonic boom and a wiggle of wings on more than one pass.

It was really cool.

I love the Blues. We get to see them practice all the time. The boom boom boom and everything shaking bugs the heck out of the wife lol. Over the years I worked on the refit of their hanger a few times and got to meet several of them in the process. You know how everybody has that one thing that takes them back to being a kid, not just reminds them of it but, for that moment you are in aww just like a 4 year old looking up at his gigantic father. The blues are that for me. I grew up here with them. Even though the jets they use have changed over the years I always know when it's them and not another F/A-18. I have been watching in aww since they were flying the F-4. When all the other military brats were lying about their daddy that worked in the motorpool and saying he was in the special forces or whatever I was claiming my dad was a blue angel. He retired as a BMCS / E-8 after 26 years. I was still proud of him but my lie had to be better than theirs lol.
