Won't load anti-virus pages

Compaq / PRESARIO C300

Specs: Windows XP
Hello!
I need to download antivirus protection for my computer but apparently it's too late, I think I already got one.

Every time I try to open anti-virus web pages it won't go to the page.

I know there are previous posts about this but I have very little experience with this and would so appreciate someone who can talk me through this. Thank you

We will need to run a few scans to help determine which files are bad.

Please save this file to your desktop.

Win32kDiag.exe

Please double click on the Win32kDiag file and post the log it produces. This log might be quite lengthy and may take more than one post to get all of it posted.

Please run RSIT.exe by random/random and post its logs.

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from the following link and save it to your desktop.

RSIT.exe

1. Double click on RSIT.exe to launch program.
2.(Vista Users Only) Right click on the RSIT.exe icon and select "Run as Administrator" to run the program.
3. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
4. Your firewall may alert you that RSIT is requesting Internet access. Please allow it.
5.Once it has finished, two logs will open: log.txt<-- this will be maximized and info.txt<-- this will be minimized. Both logs will be located at C:\RSIT.exe.

Please post the contents of both logs (in separate post) in your next reply. You may have to make 4 post to get all the info to us.

Thank you for your quick response, but I'm afraid I have bad news.
The first test I was able to save to the desktop, but it said "searching windows" and then directly after "finished! push any key to continue"

The second test was even worse. When I tried to use the link the same "Internet Explorer cannot display..." message came up. That's the same thing as when I try to access anti-virus webpages

Thanks again

For the first run that is what it should do if the is not that type of infection.

The baddie may have changed some internet explorer settings. Go to start> control panel> Internt Options, go to the connections tab, click on LAN settings. Set to detect automatically, and uncheck the proxy setting.

You may need to download the to a usb drive or cd and run it on the infected computer but first try to run it from the infected computer.

Please download Rkill from the following link.

Rkill

Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. This link will help you disable them:

Click on This Link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)

A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.

If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply.

Let me know if the internet explorer setting had to changed. And if you were able to get on the internet post the RSIT log.

Okay, the internet settings have not been changed, so that's not it.

The Rkill did exactly what you said it did, black screen, then it went away, made everything disappear for a second and then nothing.

Tomorrow I will try to save the other download to a usb

Thanks again for your help!

I think Rkill ran succesfully, if you restart the computer Rkill will need to be run again as the restart will starup the bad program again. Since you are able to download these programs you internet connection would not appear to be compromised but I think your hosts file has been which would explain limited use.

Please download OTL from following site:

Link1

1. Save it to your desktop
2. Double click the OTL icon on your desktop.
3. Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following, everything between the X's:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
:Commands
[purity]
[resethosts]
[emptytemp]
[Reboot]
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Then click the Run Fix button at the top
Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply. It may be long and take 3 or 4 post to get all the info to us be please try.

There's the info from the OTL, is it safe to have all that posted on here? Also, do you still want me to get the RSIT? Thank you again!

Please post the RSIT log. It may take several post (3 or 4) to get the entire log posted so just post it in segments if needed.

If you don't have an antivirus you need to get one before you continue. You can download the free version of AVG 9.0 antivirus at this link:
AVG Free Antivirus

Update it once you get it installed.

I've posted the two RSIT posts above. In your last post you said to download anti-virus software, but here's hoping you remember that's exactly my problem, I can't open that page. Thank you!

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Remember.. any Antivirus or Anti-spyware must be turned off or disabled before running ComboFix. The clickable link "This Link" in the ComboFix tutorial will help you get them disabled.

Please download ComboFix to the desktop from one of the following links:

Link1

Link 2

Link 3

Rename the setup file, combofix.exe, before you download it. To do that once the "enter name of file to save to" box appears as the download begins in the filename box rename combofix.exe to to Combo-Fix> click save.
Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop.
If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
Tools->Options->Main tab
Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
Close any open browsers.
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on This Link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Close any open browsers.
WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
Install the recovery console when asked.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" .
Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to hang.

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security.

Please do not install any new programs or update anything unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem.
