Specs: Windows 7, 4.00 GB
Not long ago my Dell Studio 1745 performed like a gem. The system has two awesome utilities installed- Avanquest System Suite Professional 11 and Revo Unistaller Pro. These programs did and excellent job of maintaining, securing, and cleaning up my computer until just recently. About a month ago my computer started behaving oddly, but I thought nothing of it because I systematically ran my utilities and security when using it. Programs like MS Word sometimes were unresponsive. Many applications like Adobe Flash PLayer simply crashed. I started getting script error messages, and web sites took forever to load if they loaded at all. All the while I monitored its processes. Nothing stood out.

I recieved an error message today that I've never seen before; the message said my system's memory is low, and that I needed to shut down my computer and close out all open windows. What the hey? So I started digging, and this is what I discovered.

My computer didn't display low memory as far I could see. I dug around some more until I reached the running processes, and whoa! The running tasks were totally out of wack. Here's the log for running services:

In addition, my computer gave an error many times about a particular file during the monitoring process:
C:/Windows/system32/spool/drivers/x64/3//lxdxserv.exe

I Googled this file name and discovered a library of references. I also ran my security, and noted the log beginning 2/2012. Each day had about 20-30 threat entries, and they were all the same:
Security Type Port Scan detected
Severity Major
Direction Inbound
Protocol TCP
Local IP 127.0.0.1
Remote Host 127.0.0.1
Application Involved SYSTEM
Count 1

Almost 650 entries, and each entry was the same. No deviations.

What is going on here? How did I get infected? Is there a way to fix this without full restore? (FYI I have tried restoring and it only solves performance problems temporarily.)

Howdy, ShadyKaty, and welcome to Computing.net! :) I'm SongCloud and I'll be assisting you.

First off, I don't see anything in your running task list that jumps out at me. The port scan warning in interesting in that it shows as scanning from your machine to your machine. Just to be safe, lets run some extra scans.

Download and run OldTimer's List It from here: http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe and save it to your desktop. Once it is downloaded, right click on it and select "Run as Administrator". Click yes or allow for any UAC prompt that appears. Once the program is started, click on the button marked "quick scan" and let it run. Once it is complete, it will show a log named OTL.txt. This file will also be saved to your desktop. Please copy and paste the log into your reply so that I can review it.

Please let me know if you have any questions or are unable to run the scan for any reason. Please be aware that I am a volunteer and am not able to respond immediately to posts. Also be sure to let me know if you no longer require assistance. Thanks!

why not just start by cleaning up your startup items:
Startup Items: 957; 45 required; 44 user choice; 10 not required; 0 not recommended; 57 unknown

Also use Ccleaner slim to clean up excess junk files and then click on the registry icon and clean out ALL the un-needed registry files.

Another great free utitlity to run is Malwarebytes. Run a full scan and fix all it finds.

You can also monitor your start-up items with the free utility winpatrol...real user friendly..and YES....free
