Windows XP crashing when I try to log on

Acer / Aspire 5610

Specs: Windows XP

I'm having trouble with my laptop (acer aspire 5610, XP) Every time I log on, after about 10 seconds windows slows down and freezes completely, not allowing me to click on anything. During the brief moment before it crashes, im able to bring up task manager / processes and can see the CPU usage shooting up to 97%, with numerous ''rundll.exe''s along with several other unwanted processes appearing to be the cause of the problem... but I never have enough time to end any of these processes before the whole thing freezes up.

Any suggestions on how to get around this? Obviously, a virus scan is out of the question...

Hello, this could be caused by a virus, or something like that.

You should try to start in Safe Mode, and see if it happens.

If not, wile in SM, run your antivirus, It should work great.
Keep us informed.

You can see the event viewer, for more information about the errors.

And you can desable all the startup programs and services in msconfig.

Start -> Run -> msconfig -> OK
Desable all services and all startup programs.

Reboot in normal mode, see if the issue persists.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried starting in Safe Mode, and for some reason it wouldn't work. The following messages filled the screen:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers\ [ ... ] .sys (with the last one ending in ''Mup.sys''
