Specs: Vista sp1, Intel atom cpu 270 2gb ram
Hi my sons friend got a used Dell latitude and it came with Vista. Has a 16gb hard drive and no files on it other than normal system files and Chrome. They asked me to look at it bc they "thought it must have a lot of junk on it." It doesn't but there is zero hard drive space available. I've tried a lot of things like disk clean up and searching for hidden files taking up room. I tried to get rid of the manifestcache but I need to change permissions and there's not even enough space available to change permissions. On a side/related note, the computer is also infected with teryez and redirects chrome. Could the problems be related? I DL awdcleaner and malwarebytes to thumb drive so I could run them but not even enough space to run them off my thumb drive. Any ideas? Thanks

16 Gig is barely enough to run the OS. Are you sure there isn't a second partition on the drive? Can you provide the Service Tag of the laptop?

✔ Best Answer
"Dell latitude and it came with Vista. Has a 16gb hard drive"

It would help to know the model number of the Latitude. Is it possible the HDD is actually a SSD? That would make sense. Could it be a Latitude 2100 Netbook? The specsheet shows a 16GB SSD as one of the options:

"the computer is also infected with teryez and redirects chrome"

It's a browser hijacker. Relatively easy to remove & it's doubtful it has anything to do with your problems. But before you can remove it, you will have to uninstall some programs or delete some files so you have some breathing room to work with.

Download CCleaner Portable to a USB thumbdrive, unzip it, open the folder, double click on CCleaner.exe & then run the cleaner - remove everything it finds:

Yep. You're right.
421-0701 : Windows XP PRO SP3 with Windows Vista Business License English,Dell Latitude
341-0022 : 16GB Dell Mobility Solid State Drive for Latitude

I've worked with those systems. There's barely enough room on the HDD for the OS. I would restart the system, F12 to get to the Boot Menu, and run through the option to Restore the computer to Factory settings.

That would set it back to the way it was when it was shipped from Dell. Then, you could install whatever programs you want as long as your HDD doesn't fill up. Keep in mind, if you do this, any data or programs added to the computer would be removed.

Or, you could buy a new HDD for the system and install Windows from scratch.

Yes you hit it exactly. It's the 2100 so that all makes sense. I was able to free up enough for adwcleaner and it found nothing. I'll do ccleane r next. Thanks! I'm assuming I should tell this kid's mom that this won't work at all for minecraft.... Oh well I appreciate the quick answer!

"I'm assuming I should tell this kid's mom that this won't work at all for minecraft"

Correct. Even if it was running in tip-top shape it wouldn't matter because it doesn't meet the minimum hardware requirements. The processor is too weak & so are the graphics.
