Windows Defender always turns off?

January 3, 2011 at 09:34:37
Specs: Windows Vista
When ever I switch my computer back on, windows security centre alerts me that windows defender is turned off. I turn it on, yet still it turns itself off? How can I stop this?

Windows security centre has also recently started to alert me that my anitvirus program is out of date...which it shouldn't be and the program won't let me install any updates.

Do I have a virus?

It could be something to do with your Host file needing to be reset, if you cannot update the obsolete databases. Please download and run Hostxpert from here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showth...

Are you receiving any pop up's such as "You are infected!" or "Warning! viruses found"?.

As for Windows Defender.. Reboot into Safe Mode (tapping F8), then go to "Start" and in the search box type "Msconfig", then go to the "Startup" tab and look for "Windows Defender", make sure the startup type is set to "Automatic". If you need help, here's a guide: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msc...

Also, before scanning with Hostxpert, I would recommend scanning with Malware Bytes here: http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebyt...

Hi,

No I'm not getting any warnings, and when I scan it doesn't pick up any viruses.
Thanks for the advice though, I'll give it a try.
