|And something to keep in mind for the future.... Ensure that "all" your (and your wife's) files - whatever they may be - are safely duplicated/copied off teh system entirely. Typically to DVD but to an external hard drive to is nice(r).|
That way if you "have" to rebuild the system- factory reset/restore routine.... your files etc. are safe elsewhere, and can be copied back to the hard drive later (if needs-be).
Sadly so many fail to duplicate/copy their files off the computer as above; and when things really go wrong... often lose the lot...
You say that now you can't use your laptop... What is actually happening when you boot up? Do you see a login screen as normal - even a choice of user accounts/logins?
Try to avoid writing "anything" to drive for now; and post back with a more clear description of what's actually happening... It "may" be possible to recover personal files at least; and "might" be possible to even recover proper access to the system.
