Why do recovered files now have dollar sign $ preceding it?

January 16, 2016 at 23:21:51
Specs: Windows 7
My computer crashed recently and I had to attempt to recover files. Now many of these files including Word Docs, Excel sheets, pictures etc. now have a dollar sign at the beginning of the file name and I am unable to open the files. I am more concerned with my pictures. Can these files be fixed? Thanks

What software did you use to do the recovery?

"Word Docs, Excel sheets, pictures etc"
Try this, Copy & Paste them all into a test folder.

Right click on the folder or open the folder & highlight all the files, then right click on the folder or the highlighted files & select run as Administrator.

Make copies of them and try changing the names of the copies and substitute the proper letter/digit instead of the dollar sign and see if it opens properly after that.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Is it just a $ sign at the start of each file, or is there also a tilde ~ sign preceding the $ sign?

An earlier post at CN had the same issue:

Do they all have the correct file extensions?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Most if not all deleted files often have the first character removed. $ is probably a "placeholder."
