What is the best free anti-virus program?

May 11, 2011 at 13:47:05
Specs: Windows XP
I've looked on numerous sites and they all have different recommendations.

I'm starting to think that there aren't any good ones out there.

Can someone help guide me to the correct solution?

Ha! Good question. In my opinion there is no 'best' one but there are some very good ones. Some people love AVG, I don't! Personally my fave is Comodo Internet Security combined AV and Firewall. I tested a few and this worked best for me but not everyone will agree on that.

You need to try a couple and decide for yourself really

avast free is much better than both of the above mentioned....comodo is really weak and AVG has tons of problems:

Be sure to unload your previous AV properly or no other AV will work properly

Been using avast! free version for years. All my friends have it installed also, and they are happy with it.

Have another computer with Microsoft Security Essentials.
avast! free and it did not get along very well...

Had AVG at some point, but said goodbye to it. Too many problems...

'Have another computer with Microsoft Security Essentials.
avast! free and it did not get along very well...'

That's because you can't have 2 AV's running at the same time, they conflict.

"Have another computer with Microsoft Security Essentials.

avast! free and it (the other computer) did not get along very well...

Would never have two AVs installed on the same computer!! That is asking for trouble.

Have another computer with Microsoft Security Essentials because avast! free and the computer did not get along very well. So, now the computer has MSE installed, instead of avast! free.

DON'T get MSE. My mom was using my dad's PC and it had MSE on it. She was looking at some pictures on Google and one of them redirected to that fake Windows XP screen with a fake Virus alert and my mom downloaded it, but she didn't run it. And she saved it to the desktop and MSE didn't catch it. I also went there and right clicked it and put Scan with MSE, and it still didn't catch it. FAIL. Don't use MSE. Get Avast.
