Looks to be Adware. I'd get rid of it, if I were you.

You should find it in your browser add-ons/Extensions, you can disable and remove it from there. If not:

Start | Run | appwiz.cpl

Locate the offending item from this (once it's populated) | Right click | Remove.

Searchqu is not an add-on in my browser nor is it in any of the programmes listed in the uninstall or remove feature.
searchqu appears when I am viewing my googlemail and try to view SOME attachments. it runs in the address bar but never produces an image

You are right, but it is too late it has already infected my computer. The problem now is how to remove it. Norton failed to stop it and the replies received so far do not appear to work for me.

if you are infected (I really don't think so myself) then run a full scan with malwarebytes and fix all it finds.

I got rid of it by completely uninstalling all Firefox programs, then after I uninstalled Firefox, I reinstalled it and problem solved.

3- mlawarebytes
