virus or spyware scam

Specs: WinXP, 1.80GHz
I have WinXP with good memory and space. The problem is that even with my anti virus software threw AOL I have some type of virus on my computer that keeps popping up called Anti Virus Live or something like that. When I try to open up certain files, folders or whatever including system restore it won't let me and it keeps popping up telling me my computer is infected and if I want to run a scan. Also it asks me to purchase the full version or to continue without it (clearly it being some kind of scam). Can anyone tell me how to remove this? It even stops CCleaner from opening and when I do get it opened it doesn't work. It always comes back. Thanks in advance.

Don't feel alone, people have been buying into the "AOL we can protect you scam for years".

The only way to protect yourself is to "protect yourself and stop expecting someone else like AOL to do it".

Download AVG and use it religiously!

Embrace paranoia, they ARE out to get you!

I work in a computer store and i've had this virus before it
takes some time to remove it but heres how
1 first reboot into safe mode with networking (its f8 when the
computers booting up)

2 restore all defaults in the windows firewall and internet
options( and under connections see its going though a proxy server if it is uncheck it) from control panel.

3 open ccleaner and remove it from start-up

4 go to this website and download
5 update it to the max
6 Run it at full scan and it should remove it
7 download and install spybot search & destory and run it
after you've updated it
8 finally download and install Avast anti virus and update it
tells you have to get a free code on there site

skip this step if u have 64-Bit windows
9 the computer should ask to restart after the installation after
restarting open Avast up (stop the memory check) right click
anywhere on the program and choose schedule boottime
scan in the new window check off the scan achives option and
the other one and make it so it deletes the files without
asking for comfiration

10 and its removed

if it comes back after this your surfing the wrong type of websites
