The best I can think of is to disable any extra running processes. I also have XP Home, and the processes running right now are:

svchost.exe
osppsvc.exe
rundll32.exe
alg.exe
rundll32.exe (2)
explorer.exe
snmp.exe
tcpsvcs.exe
svchost.exe (2)
svchost.exe (3)
mfevtps.exe
svchost.exe (4)
mdm.exe
lsass.exe
services.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe
rundll32.exe (3)
smss.exe
svchost.exe (5)
svchost.exe (6)
System
System Idle Process

I excluded a few that looked like programs (ie firefox.exe)

Derby_182,

Give this a whirl:

Press CTRL + ALT + DEL, New Task, and type "explorer.exe"
Press: Enter

Can you get to your Desktop and the rest?
