Virus disabled sound completely?

October 23, 2010 at 22:49:16
Specs: Windows XP
Ok, I think I've got a virus on my computer. It has completely disabled audio on everything, even when the computer is offline. I checked the computer settings and in sounds and devices, the audio is faded and I can't access it. Last night the 'windows alert' virus appeared in my toolbar so I completely freaked out and thought it was that attacking my computer. I went on this site accidentally and found someone who had problems with the windows virus so I downloaded the malwarebytes anti-malware protection to try and get rid of the problem. It did not fix it. Also when I'm on the internet the browsers close and try to recover the page but it adds on to the title at the beginning and then has to close. Please can someone help?

"Last night the 'windows alert' virus appeared in my toolbar"
What kind of alert was it? Was it from YOUR anti-virus or a different one?
What anti-virus are you using?

a virus will not disable sound on your laptop. Open the device manager and see if there are any alerts in there...if there are, tell us which one it is
