Sorry for the subject title but i didnt know how else to better explain it. My sons computer recently got a virus with numerous pop ups. Some pretending to be an antivirus, asking to scan the computer for possible viruses. Knowing it was phony i closed out IE8 using the devise manager. I then attempted to update malwarebytes and AVG AV as well as Super AntiSpyware so i can run a scan but i was unable to get my internet connection up and running again. I restarted the pc in safe mode and ran a scan (without the updated definitions). Malware bytes and Super AntiSpyware caught some trojens and removed them. However i still cannot get on the internet. I dont think i eliminated all viruses. Can a virus prevent me from accessing my internet? My internet is actively working because i can go online via wifi on my laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try resetting your hosts file by following the instructions from this Major Geeks post:

I would try scanning with Hitman Pro as well:

I would also dump AVG and try Avast!, or Kaspersky.

Thanks i was able to fix the problem. It appears the virus enabled the proxy server under internet options. Once i unchecked this i was able to update AVG, Malwarebytes and Super Antispyware. I ran a full scan of each on safe mode and was able to remove the virus. My internet and PC are running good again.
